MISSION
The Department of Social Development works in partnership with people in their communities to improve their wellbeing through the promotion of social development with equity for the disadvantaged, the vulnerable, persons with disabilities and the excluded.
CORE PROGRAMMES OF THE UNIT
Community Care
- Services to Persons With Disability (PWDs)
- Hospital Welfare Services
- Response on HIV/AIDS
- Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP)
- Work with Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs),
- Vocational Training
- Hospital Welfare Services
Child Rights Promotion and protection
- Casework with families, eg. Child non-maintenance, child custody, paternity, family welfare, child welfare, family reconciliation, child survival and development, etc.
- Early Childhood Development Centres,
- Orphanages/children’s home,
- Elimination of child labour,
- Child trafficking and other child related issues.
Justice Administration
- Court work-(Family Tribunal and Juvenile Courts)
- Investigation and writing of social and psychological enquiry reports (SERs) to the courts,
- Probation services
- Through Care in Department of Social Welfare Institutions,
- Adoption and Fostering,
- Prison After-care services,
- Collaboration with Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Police
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT UNIT
FIVE (5) MAIN PROGRAMMES
- ADULT EDUCATION – Mass meeting /study groups
To sensitize, inform and educate the people on government/ district assemblies programs and policies
- HOME SCIENCE EXTENSION
Ensures the transfer of skills in home management, nutrition and income generation to organized women/community groups.
3.EXTENSION SERVICES
Provides specialized skills in community animation, mobilization and organization to governmental / non – governmental agencies ie. CWSA, NGOs, Rural Enterprise program/BACs
4.YOUTH IN SKILL TRAINING
Provision of technical and vocation skills training to youth for self-sufficiency and independence
- SELF – HELP INITIATIVES
Provision of technical advice and services like carpenters, masons to communities that initiate their own self – help projects.
