The Techiman Municipal Assembly on February 12, 2024 inaugurated forty-six(46) Assembly members to foster development in the Municipality.
The inauguration took place at Bonokyempem Hall in accordance to the 1992 Constitution and the Local Government Act,2016(Act 936).
Addressing the house, the MCE, Hon. Benjamin Yaw Gyarko congratulated all the Assembly members and Unit Committee members in the recent district level elections.
He urged them to be active in deliberative, legislative and executive functions to help improve infrastructure and living conditions of the people in Techiman.
He called on Assembly members to work together to achieve a common developmental agenda for the Municipality.
The thirty-two(32) elected Assembly members and the fourteen(14) appointees were led to swear the oath of allegiance and secrecy by His Lordship, Kwadwo Frimpong Manso.
Hon. Kwadwo Oppong Nkrumah, who represented the President, His Excellency Nana Addo Danqua Akuffo- Addo in his address also congratulated all the Assembly Members and the Unit Committee for their success in the recent District level elections.
He reiterated the government’s commitment in promoting decentralisation in the Country.
He called for a continuous capacity building and sensitisation for all Assembly members to enable them t
carry out their roles effectively.
He also called for unity among the MCE, Presiding member, the Coordinating Director and the Assembly members to foster quick development in the Municipality.
ELECTION OF PRESIDING MEMBER
Pursuant to section 17(1) of the Local Government Act, 2016,(Act 936), there should be a Presiding member who shall be elected among the Assembly members.
It must be noted that, by the close of nomination, two (2) people filed to contest the position. They were Nana Boakye Ameyaw Pentemprem and Hon.Zacharia Mohammed.
After two successive elections in the day conducted by the Electoral Commission, none of them secured the two-thirds majority as required by law to be declared the winner and per the law, another election has to be conducted within ten(10) days on these two personalities to elect a Presiding member for the Assembly.
