The Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, Hon. Yaw Frimpong Addo yesterday, 15th December,2022 announced the minimum farm gate price for cashew as GH 8.50 per kilo from the GH 5.00 per kilo in the last crop season at an event in Baamiri, Techiman.
He explained that, a minimum price is the price that nobody can buy the product below but above, one can negotiate.
He called on players along the cashew value chain to respect the pricing regime.
The MCE, Hon. Benjamin Yaw Gyarko who represented the Bono-East Regional Minister, Hon. Kwasi Adu-Gyan thanked the Government for fulfilling his promise to give a guarantee price to farmers in cashew farming.
He said the establishment of Tree Crop Development Authority with the responsibility of formulating policies and programs to guide research, production, pricing and marketing of the six(6) tree crops including cashew is enough testimony of government’s commitment to cashew farming.
He informed the gathering that, through the government’s flagship program dubbed “Living Income and Tree Crop Project”, a cashew farmer group in his municipality has been selected among the six Cashew Cooperatives in the whole country to benefit from the program.
He mentioned the Agosa Cashew Farmers’ Cooperative Society of receiving pole pruners, mower, tricycle and chainsaw under the flagship program.
He added that, through Planting for Export and Rural Development (PERD) module under Planting for Food and Jobs programme, government has established two Farmers Groups in the Municipality at Tanoso and Bianhyewo and have been engaged by the Assembly in nursery establishment and management, budding, grafting,marketing and distribution of seedlings.
He said the rationale behind the program is to promote rural economic growth and improve household incomes of rural farmers.
He disclosed also that, the Assembly this year has distributed over 35000 free cashew seedlings to farmers in the Municipality to promote the vision of government.
